Delta to wait on its pick for new superintendent
Delta County School District 50J will be without a permanent leader a little bit longer.
Delta’s School Board, two advisory boards with a total of 24 community members, and district staff interviewed three candidates last week for the district’s superintendent post. The finalists were Mountain Valley School District Superintendent Corey Doss, Redlands Middle School Principal Kelly Reed, and Jeff Perry, a superintendent in Wise, Va.
School Board members decided Monday they liked one candidate, but that person withdrew from consideration. Board President Tom Mingen declined to name that candidate.
The board decided not to offer the job to the other two candidates and will begin the search again later this year, likely in November, Mingen said. He said the board decided not to repost the position now because it is late in the school year.
“It’s a little different than any other field in that when people look for (superintendent) jobs, they look for ones that start in the fall and end at the end of the school year,” Mingen said. “People looking for superintendent jobs have been out there several months looking, so they could accept a job in July. The pool is not there right now.”
In the meantime, Mingen said the board will restructure the district’s administration office and create an assistant superintendent position. The board began advertising the position Monday and will seek applications through May 3. The board plans to meet May 5 to select three finalists for that position, interview those finalists May 7, and possibly hire one of them by the end of May.
Colorado Revised Statutes require school board members wait two weeks between announcing superintendent finalists and offering a job to one of them, but this restriction does not apply when hiring an assistant superintendent.
Mingen said the assistant superintendent post will be permanent and involve covering duties usually performed by a superintendent until a new superintendent is hired. Interim Superintendent Jerre Doss will continue to work in the district until an assistant superintendent can start.
Doss has served as Delta’s interim leader since former superintendent Mike McMillan stepped down in January.
