Delta students going to national competition

Lincoln Elementary School in Delta will send 14 students to the Destination Imagination Global Finals on May 23–26 in Knoxville, Tenn.

Two teams of seven Lincoln students qualified for Colorado’s Destination Imagination championship during a regional competition March 10 in Palisade. Both teams qualified for the global championship at the state event April 14 in Denver.

Destination Imagination is a competitive program that encourages students to demonstrate their creativity and knowledge through skits, problem-solving activities, storytelling and other challenges. One of Lincoln’s teams placed first at the state tournament, and the other placed third.

This is the first time students from Delta have qualified for the Global Finals. Two teams from Hotchkiss and one team from Paonia qualified for the international championship in past years.

Lincoln Elementary Destination Imagination Coordinator Nancy Green, who is also the school’s librarian, said the kids and their three coaches are excited for the “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to compete at the international level with 1,200 teams from across the U.S. and 15 other countries.

“They’re so hyped they can hardly see straight,” Green said.

The teams have to raise a minimum of $1,600 per person to go on the trip. That’s a hefty fundraising goal because students, their parents and their coaches are traveling to Tennessee.

One of the team parents, Fruita Monument High School teacher Pierre Corbasson, said he hopes to find business sponsorships to raise funds fast.

“You could probably only make $10,000 selling Krispy Kremes and having bake sales,” he said.

The teams had a spaghetti dinner and silent auction Saturday and will have a bake sale and car wash May 12, Green said. Some area schools will raise money for the teams by having students pay $1 to wear a hat or have crazy hair at school for a day.

Anyone who wants to donate to get the teams to Tennessee can make a contribution to Destination Imagination, Nancy Green, at Wells Fargo Banks.
