UPDATE: Body found in search for missing dirt biker
Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey said that search and rescue crews looking in the desert and Bookcliffs north of Grand Junction for a missing dirt biker have found a body.
Hilkey stopped short of saying that it is 34-year-old Nolus Xavier Sunoon of Denver, who Mesa County Search and Rescue volunteers have been looking for since 9 p.m. Monday.
Sunoon’s friends reported him overdue after he drove to the Grand Valley on Saturday by himself and didn’t return to Denver by Monday afternoon, according to Mesa County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Heather Benjamin.
Benjamin said searchers found Sunoon’s dirt bike and helmet east of the command post they set up Monday. They’re continuing to search for Sunoon north of Grand Junction Regional Airport.
Officials found the Sunoon’s truck and trailer off 27 1/4 Road Monday night. About 20 Search and Rescue volunteers are combing over the area on all-terrain vehicles and have deployed a helicopter to search the Bookcliffs. The Civil Air Patrol will bring in a plane to assist in the search, Benjamin said.
“He’s been over here a lot,” she said of the missing man. “He’s an experienced dirt biker, he’s experienced with the area.”
