Donation buys phone cards for war medics to call home
MONTROSE — The Delta-Montrose Electric Association recently donated money to purchase phone cards for members of the Montrose-based 928th Area Support Medical Company of the Colorado National Guard to stay in touch with loved ones during the holiday season.
In a news release, the DMEA, through its Touchstone Energy community budget, made a donation of $928 to purchase phone cards, which will be shipped to the unit currently serving a one-year tour in Afghanistan.
The 928 ASMC, also known as the Witch Doctors or the Mile High Medics, is expected to return in early February. A date and time has not been determined.
The 85 members of the 928 ASMC are stationed in four separate locations with half of the unit in two locations, near the capital, Kabul. The two other locations are at Bagram Air Force base, north of Kabul, and at a forward operating base in of Khost.
Those locations span an area of 300 miles, where the unit treats U.S. and NATO soldiers for everything from mild sickness to injuries suffered in combat.
The unit consists of a variety of doctors, registered nurses, physician assistants, medics and EMTs who serve as backup to company-level medics in the field and treat injured soldiers on MEDEVAC flights from those combat zones.
The unit is based out of Denver and Montrose, with members coming from nearly every community on the Western Slope, including Grand Junction, Rifle, Montrose, Delta, Hotchkiss and Austin.
“DMEA is pleased to help some of the families who are part of our own co-op be in better touch with their loved ones now serving in Afghanistan,” said Dan McClendon, the association’s general manager.
For residents of the Western Slope who want to connect with the unit 7,000 miles away, donations and information can be found through the Grand Junction National Guard Family Program office at 482 28 Road in Grand Junction or by calling 250-5542.
