Donors refurbish adventure vehicle for KAFM fundraiser

Photo by Gretel Daugherty—KAFM community radio will raffle off a Desert Cruiser, a revamped 1987 Toyota FJ60 Land Cruiser, on Aug. 13. The fundraiser is part of the Watts Up! campaign for KAFM, which is trying to boost the power of its signal to 300 watts.

It is a makeover of startling proportions.

From the custom petroglyph vinyl wrap inspired by the Moab area, to the custom sound system scheduled for installation this week, the 1987 Toyota FJ60 Land Cruiser that KAFM Community Radio is raffling off this summer has gone from beaten down vehicle to unique gem, said Marc Foster, KAFM executive director.

“You wouldn’t have turned your head when it went by,” he said of the 1987 vehicle. “Now, you turn your head.”

KAFM is nearing the completion of its Watts Up! capital campaign to raise more than $116,000 to bolster its broadcasting strength from 16 watts to 300 watts. The Land Cruiser raffle will hopefully be the final fundraiser in the campaign, Foster said.

The reason Foster and others in the community are so excited about the Land Cruiser raffle is that so many people in the community made it happen, Foster said.

The story of the 1987 Land Cruiser began months ago when Safari Ltd. owners Hugh and Kelly Phillips donated the vehicle to KAFM to raffle off.

Once the vehicle was donated, more than one dozen other local businesses contributed other products or services to turn the Land Cruiser into the Desert Cruiser being raffled off.

The vehicle and all its improvements are worth more than $20,000, Foster said.

Businesses that contributed to the “Desert Cruiser” are:

Safari Ltd., the Land Cruiser, an “Old Man Emu” suspension and a 3-inch lift kit.

All Metals Welding & Fabrication, the custom front and back powder-coated bumpers, brush guards

Battlement Fabrication, the custom roof rack.

Big O Tires, the 33-inch Mud Terrain tires plus alignment.

Bill Burke’s 4-Wheeling America, a day of professional off-road vehicle training, a “Getting Unstuck & Getting Prepared” DVD, a Hi-Lift Jack and accessories and a Limited-Edition Toyota Land Cruiser tool bag.

The Board & Buckle, the Swagman 2-bike receiver hitch rack.

Bud’s Signs, the custom “desert petroglyph” vinyl wrap.

Cabela’s, an Igloo 50-quart “Maxcold” cooler, a 12 LED lantern with remote, two stainless steel water bottles, two water bottles, two light keychains and $20 gift card.

Glass Pros Inc., a new windshield

Mountain Khakis, custom recycled canvas pants seat covers (removable and washable).

Perri’s Collision, Repair & Refinishing, body work and priming and preparation for vinyl wrap.

REI, a Coleman “Roadtrip LXE” propane grill.

Scotty’s Muffler Lube Brakes & Car Wash, new exhaust system, complete detail work.

Summit Canyon Mountaineering, two Mountain Hardwear “Pinhole” 20-degree sleeping bags, two Travelchair “French Cut” camp chairs.

Taber Auto Body Paint & Frame,  structural overview.

U.S. Tech, custom sound system.

Mountain Khakis employee Jen Taylor, who is on KAFM’s board of directors, worked three weeks to help make the custom seat covers from 14 recycled pairs of 10.4-ounce cotton canvas pants.

The unique covers are just part of what makes the vehicle unlike any other in the world, Taylor said.

Raffle tickets are $20 and will be sold through August 13.

The winner will be announced during KAFM’s annual Radio Daze celebration Aug. 13 at Kannah Creek Brewing Co., 1960 North 12th St. Ticket holders do not need to be present to win.

Tickets are for sale at KAFM, 1310 Ute Ave., Safari Ltd., 1005 Pitkin Ave., and Summit Canyon Mountaineering, 461 Main St.

Tickets also are for sale through KAFM’s website, http://www.kafmradio.org.

There is no limit on how many tickets a person can buy.

“I hope a local wins it because I want to see it drive around town,” Foster said.
