DOW honors Hotchkiss wildlife manager

You never know where Doug Homan might show up, but you can be sure he’ll be there.
Homan, a district wildlife manager in Hotchkiss for the Colorado Division of Wildlife, has spent more than 30 years doing what he loves best. He’s managed a career working for the benefit of wildlife, including countless hours in and out of classrooms giving youngsters first-hand experience with wildlife, working with landowners and the public to improve communication and enforcing wildlife laws.

Ah, yes, he’s pretty good at the latter. In addition to riding a horse into backcountry hunter
camps, he’s also known to show up unexpectedly in the Gunnison Gorge, paddling his kayak and keeping an eye on anglers who may think they’ve ventured beyond the arm of the law.

It’s all part of the job Homan has enjoyed since 1975, and for his years of outstanding service, the DOW recently selected Homan for a lifetime achievement award.

“The variety of the job is what kept me going for all these years,” said Homan, who became the Hotchkiss DOW officer in 1982. “I had a chance to move into other positions, but this job gives me a mix of duties and things that I’ve always enjoyed. I’m involved in biology, education and law enforcement.”

One of his career highlights was establishing a 400-acre conservation easement on land owned by Hotchkiss resident Casey Stengel. The property, operated by the Stengel family as a shooting range and as wildlife habitat, eventually will be owned by the DOW.

Homan was nominated for the award by Area Wildlife Manager J Wenum of Gunnison.

“Doug is dedicated to wildlife in Colorado,” Wenum said. “He’s done everything a wildlife manager is supposed to do, from research to education, from resource management to law enforcement. He truly deserves this award.”
