downtown Grand Junction receives hail as large as an inch in diameter

A strong storm dropped unusually large hail for this time of year across the Grand Junction area Saturday evening, according to the National Weather Service’s local office.

The Redlands and downtown Grand Junction received hail as large as an inch in diameter, said Aldis Strautins, a meteorologist with the Weather Service.

Hail itself is not unusual for May, Strautins said, but it’s usually much smaller.

The storm moved southeast into Delta County from Grand Junction, but reports of hail were not as prevalent there, Strautins said.

At Grand Junction Regional Airport, where the Weather Service keeps official track of precipitation, 0.4 inches of rain was reported late Saturday.

The chance of more showers and thunderstorms increases again tonight, Strautins said, while the daytime forecast calls for partly sunny skies.
