Driver dies in I-70 rollover; police say alcohol suspected

A fatal one-vehicle rollover accident shut down eastbound Interstate 70 for more than six hours early Sunday, near the 20 Road overpass.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, a crash happened minutes after midnight. Police arrived on the scene and found a 21-year-old man dead in the eastbound lanes and the wreckage of a 2006 Pontiac G6 that had rolled multiple times in the center median.

Police said that the car was approaching a right-hand curve in the roadway, when it veered off the left side of the highway, striking a curve advisory sign and then rolling three times.

The driver was thrown from the vehicle during the crash.

An emergency message announcing the closure of eastbound I-70 was sent after
12:30 a.m. Sunday, and traffic was re-routed to U.S. Highway 6&50 for more than six hours, until the highway was re-opened shortly after 6:30 a.m.

Alcohol is suspected in the crash, and the accident is under investigation.

The name of the driver killed in the accident had not been released by authorities as of Sunday night.
