Driver hits 10 cars in parking lot of grocery

A man crashed his truck into 10 cars Tuesday in the parking lot of the Safeway grocery store on Horizon Drive.

The man was “suffering from a medical condition” behind the wheel of his Chevrolet Avalanche, said Kate Porras, spokeswoman for the Grand Junction Police Department. He was going an estimated 35 to 40 mph in the parking lot at 681 Horizon Drive, she said.

The driver was taken to Community Hospital for his condition, she said, but she did not know if he suffered any injuries in the crash.

“Most of the injuries in this incident were minor,” Porras said.

An employee retrieving shopping carts in the parking lot at the time of the wrecks was knocked down, and the air bag of one car hit by the truck deployed.

The driver of that vehicle was treated at the scene for a cut, Porras said.

Five of the 10 vehicles that were hit had to be towed away, she said.

“It kinda varied depending on the vehicle,” she said of the damage to the vehicles. “Some of the cars were knocked around the parking lot.”

Some vehicles may have collided with other cars in the lot as well, she said.

Charges for the driver of the truck are a possibility, and alcohol may have been a factor in the accidents, she said.
