Events Monday will mark Veterans Day

DEAN HUMPHREY/The Daily Sentinel—The Central High School Junior ROTC unit carries a huge American flag during a parade Saturday in downtown Grand Junction to mark Veterans Day, a national holiday that will be celebrated Monday.



The following is a list of community activities and recognitions happening Monday, Veterans Day, around the area:

Fruita ceremony

■ 11 a.m.

■ Western Slope Vietnam War Memorial Park, at the Colorado Welcome Center in Fruita, just off the Fruita exit from Interstate 70.

■ Armed Forces veterans will be honored at a ceremony that will feature music and a keynote speech by Tom Fisher, Mesa County administrator and a National Guard colonel.

■ Parking is available at the park and attendees are encouraged to bring their own seating.

Flag ceremonies

■ The Commons of Hilltop, 625 271/2 Road, Grand Junction. 1:30 p.m.

■ The Fountains of Hilltop, 3203 N. 15th St., Grand Junction, 3 p.m.

Public is invited to both free ceremonies.

 

Holy Family celebration

■  Gymnasium at Holy Family Catholic School, 786 26 1/2 Road, Grand Junction, 2 p.m.

Students will honor veterans in a ceremony that will include music, readings and salutes. Attendees are encouraged to wear red, white and blue.

Restaurant promotions

For veterans and active-duty military personnel on Veterans Day

■ Applebee’s — One free Signature meal

■ Chili’s — Choose one of seven free meals

■ Denny’s — Free all-you-can-eat pancakes, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

■ Golden Corral — Free meal

■ Hooters — 10 free boneless wings with drink purchase

■ Little Caesars — Free Crazy Bread

■ Olive Garden — Free entree

■ Outback Steakhouse — Free Bloomin’ Onion and a Coke, Monday and Tuesday; also 10 percent military discount from Nov. 13 - Dec. 31.

■ Texas Roadhouse — Free lunch from a limited menu and drink

■ Einstein Bros. Bagels — Free bagel

■ Red Lobster — Free appetizer

■ Village Inn — Free pie or pancakes

 

Fees waived

■ Colorado state parks — Military men and women get free admission on Veterans Day Monday

■ U.S. National Parks: Free admission for everyone, Nov. 10 to Nov. 12

 

Canned food drive

Throughout the month of November, you can bring canned and non-perishable foods to either Mesa County Sheriff’s Office location:

■ Long’s Park substation, Patterson Road, 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays.

■ Main sheriff’s office, 215 Rice St., Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All food will be delivered to the local veterans center the first week of December.
