Events planned in GJ in commemoration of 9-11 terror attacks

Several ceremonies remembering the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, are scheduled for Thursday in the Grand Valley.

A ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1247, 1404 Ute Ave., the first of the commemorations.

At 8:30 a.m., students and staff at Scenic Elementary School, 451 W. Scenic Drive, will gather around the flagpole to commemorate the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and the crash of one airliner into the earth in Pennsylvania.

The attacks claimed nearly 3,000 lives.

Students and staff at Scenic will wear red, white and blue for the commemoration.

At 9:30 a.m., the Mesa State College AmeriCorps Project will host a commemoration at the old Mesa County Courthouse, 544 Rood Ave., where 343 flags will be planted on the lawn to remember the firefighters and police officers who died in the World Trade Center attack.
