Exercise science degree approved for Mesa State

Mesa State College will have a new degree offering this fall: a bachelor of science in exercise science.

The Colorado Commission on Higher Education gave final approval Friday afternoon during a meeting in Denver.

The new program will take the existing curriculum for the college’s exercise-science concentration, which exists in the kinesiology department, and blend it with more chemistry and biology courses. No new courses are being proposed.

The exercise-science concentration will still exist for students who don’t want to delve into more science courses, but it will be renamed the fitness and health promotion concentration for a bachelor’s in kinesiology.

The new degree offers more science background to students who wish to enroll in graduate programs for physical therapy, medical school, exercise science or other related degrees.

The college estimates the program will enroll 12 students in its first year and attract about 20 students once it is fully implemented.

Mesa State’s board of trustees approved the exercise science program in March.
