Father, son spend night in snowstorm
Two snowmobilers spent the night in near whiteout conditions Sunday night before authorities with Garfield County search and rescue found them outside Rifle.
A 47-year-old man and his 17-year-old son were supposed to be home by 4 p.m. after riding up Four-Mile trail but were still missing at 9 p.m. when the Garfield County Sheriff’s Department was notified, according to a release from the sheriff’s department.
A search and rescue team was organized Sunday night because a snowstorm moved into the area, and the two did not have sufficient equipment. Two teams searched the trail and adjacent trails until whiteout conditions forced them to suspend the search about 3 a.m, the release said. The men were found at 6:30 a.m. after the search resumed.
The snowmobilers were overtaken by the storm and traveled three miles in the wrong direction.
They built a fire and shelter and tried to find their way back during the day. Both were found in good health, the release said.
