Fire destroys Rifle trailer

A fire destroyed an older, double-wide house trailer north of Rifle on Friday afternoon.

No one was home at the time, and no injuries occurred, said Rob Willits, a battalion chief with the Rifle Fire Protection District.

He said the cause remains under investigation. The Garfield County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release there were no obvious signs of arson.

Willits said he believes a couple of young, single men were living there and had friends they would be able to stay with. They also were in contact with the Red Cross, he said.

The fire occurred at 3063 Colorado Highway 325, near the Rifle Creek Golf Course below Rifle Gap Reservoir. The fire was near the road, which had to be closed for a while to stage firefighting equipment, Willits said.

Firefighters were notified of the blaze at 3:17 p.m. Willits said the fire was controlled by about 4 p.m.

“We had a real active fire in at least two-thirds of (the trailer), and the rest is burned as well,” Willits said.

Fourteen Rifle firefighters responded with several pieces of equipment, and two Burning Mountains Fire Protection District personnel were on the scene, he said.
