For three new bike parks, vote early and often
A local nonprofit organization that creates hiking and biking trails has a good idea to create three bike parks in the Grand Valley.
But to make it a reality, it needs residents to click a mouse or press a few buttons.
COPMOBA, the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association, is in the running to receive $250,000 from Pepsi’s Refresh America campaign. The funds will be awarded to the two projects that receive the most votes before the month’s end.
On Tuesday, COPMOBA was in 136th place, a bump up from being in 250th place last week, COPMOBA board member Nattana Johnson said.
Place markers are determined by the number of people voting online or sending a text message, voting for the project.
“We just made 5,000 business cards to drop off to get the word out to people to vote daily,” Johnson said.
COPMOBA members learned of the campaign watching commercials during the Super Bowl, and the small-budget nonprofit decided to take a stab at the fundraising idea.
The group is building three bike-skills parks at the base of popular mountain biking and hiking trail systems in Grand Junction, Palisade and Fruita. If the money is not earned in the contest, the parks will be built in phases, and the nonprofit will seek funds through the community, Johnson said.
“We’re hoping that (the community will) back us either way,” she said. “It’s a long shot. It really boils down to who has the most votes.”
Meanwhile, Coca-Cola has launched a similar fundraising campaign to vote for your favorite park.
Colorado National Monument could earn $100,000 from the soft-drink company if it earns enough votes by the Aug. 31 deadline. As of Tuesday afternoon, votes for the monument had topped 500. There is no limit to how many times a person can vote in this contest.
If the monument wins the award, the money will go toward programming for School District 51 students and new services for the public, according to Colorado National Monument Superintendent Joan Anzelmo.
