Former Delta councilman accused of sexual assault
A former Delta city councilman was arrested Monday on suspicion of multiple counts of sexual assault against a child.
Roy Lynn Nelson, 40, was jailed on suspicion of seven counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, Delta police said in a news release.
The department declined further comment, citing an active investigation.
According to court records, Nelson was released from Delta County Jail on Monday morning after posting a $60,000 bond and is scheduled to return to court Sept. 22.
Delta City Manager Joe Kerby said Nelson is a former member of the Delta City Council and is the husband of Delta City Clerk Jolene Nelson.
City officials Monday were unable to confirm Nelson’s specific period of service on the council.
Roy Nelson’s arrest affidavit was sealed by judge’s order on Monday at the request of the Delta Police Department. Records at the Delta County Courthouse indicate the Seventh Judicial District Attorney’s Office also confirmed its desire to seal the arrest affidavit.
“Such confirmation is especially important in this case because the law enforcement agency has an obvious conflict of interest,” reads an order typed by Delta County Courthouse staff.
Delta police spokeswoman Jamie Head on Monday declined to release Nelson’s booking photo.
A phone message left at Nelson’s home late Monday was not returned.
