Former superintendent returns to lead school district

After a seven-year absence, Steve Strong is back at the helm of De Beque School District 49-JT.

Strong was the district’s superintendent from 1994 to 2004 and returned to the position this fall. He served as superintendent of Dolores County School District RE-2J in Dove Creek from 2004 to 2011.

Strong said he decided to take the position because he was ready to leave Dove Creek but not ready to retire.

“I always liked De Beque. This came open, so I came back,” he said.

Strong said he left De Beque because he felt “it was time for a change.”

He said the district’s current budget issues due to declining enrollment and state budget cuts didn’t scare him away from the job. He said he believes a mill levy override on this November’s ballot to help cover lost funds has a good chance of passing.

Strong replaced Marty Lucas, who served as De Beque’s superintendent for two years. He served as superintendent at two districts in Iowa before coming to Colorado and has returned to Iowa.

“It was entirely just to be closer to family,” Lucas said of the move.
