Four shot in Clifton; no arrests expanded
By SENTINEL STAFF
Four people were shot in a Clifton neighborhood late Tuesday night, and deputies detained two people they found in the area after the shooting, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Stan Hilkey couldn’t say as of midnight whether either of the detainees was a suspect in the shooting.
Reports of the shooting were broadcast on police radio at approximately 10:45 p.m.
Tuesday. The shooting occurred at an apartment building at 468 Mae St., a short street in Clifton that runs parallel to 32 Road and just north of D 1/2 Road.
According to dispatch reports, one woman was shot in the left lower back and/or left hip.
Another woman was grazed by a bullet on her ankle. One man was shot in the right elbow.
Another man may have been shot in the upper right arm.
It did not sound as though any of the injuries to the shooting victims were life-threatening.
Neighbors who heard the shots fired reported varying amounts of gunfire. One heard “four or five shots.” Another thought he heard nine shots.
According to neighbors, one of the people the deputies detained was subdued with a Taser at 32 and D 1/2 roads.
Mae Street was awash in red and blue flashing lights from patrol cars and emergency vehicles in the shooting aftermath, and many residents were standing in the street trying to find out what had happened. One neighbor counted 15 squad cars and five ambulances in the area.
A K-9 unit was brought in to search the area, and deputies established a perimeter a half-mile long and a half-mile wide.
Hilkey said it probably would be midday before the Sheriff’s Department had further updates.
