Four schools win awards based on CSAP scores

Four District 51 schools were honored Monday during an awards ceremony hosted by the Colorado Department of Education in Denver.

New Emerson Elementary School was one of 150 Colorado schools to receive a John Irwin Award this year. The award recognizes schools that place in the top 10 percent in the state for percentage of students performing at or above grade level on Colorado Student Assessment Program tests.

To qualify for the award, schools also have to make year-over-year growth close to or above average state growth in test scores for student subgroups. Those subgroups are students with disabilities, minority students, students who receive free or reduced-price lunches, and students who started the year behind grade-level proficiency.

North Fork Montessori School in Hotchkiss also received a John Irwin Award. No local schools won the award in 2010.

Last year, New Emerson received a Colorado Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award, which honors schools that rank in the top 40 percent for year-over-year improvement in test scores and meet the same growth gap expectations used for the John Irwin Award. The 162 recipients of the distinguished improvement award this year include Bookcliff Middle School, Palisade High School and Scenic Elementary School.

Basalt Elementary, Basalt Middle School and Glenwood Springs High School in Roaring Fork Re-1; Graham Mesa Elementary School in Garfield Re-2; and Paonia Elementary School in Delta School District 50J also earned Governors’ Distinguished Improvement Awards this year.

This is the second consecutive year Basalt Middle School and Paonia Elementary received the award. Crawford Elementary and Carbondale Middle School earned the accolade last year.
