Fruita ends summer with victory

Fruita concluded its summer baseball season Saturday with a 12-7 victory over Rifle and second place in the Rifle U-18 Tournament.

The game was shortened to five innings by rain.

Fruita collected 10 hits and pounced on Rifle early, scoring seven runs in the first inning and five more in the second.

Colton Chamberlain was the winning pitcher, tossing the first three innings, striking out six and walking three. Kelin Henke closed the game, pitching 1 2/3 innings.

Cody Basinger was 2 for 4 with a double and was joined with two hits by Casey Mays and Marshall Gore. Connor Cronkhite had one hit and drove in two runs. Gore also had two RBI.

Fruita finished the season 22-11 and claimed two firsts and two seconds in the tournaments it played in.
