Fruita board pitching in cash to help host events

Fruita businesses and organizations that want to host entertainment events could soon receive some cash assistance from the city to help cover the cost of putting on those events.

The City Council has approved a grant program that will make a total of $2,000 available this year. Applicants can request up to $500 for an event and must match dollar-for-dollar any grant amount.

“I think this is an excellent idea,” Councilman Bob Fuller said.

City officials for years have offered a mini-grant program through its tourism board to agencies and businesses for everything ranging from sign replacements to trail maps. The new program is intended to lend a hand for specific events that will draw people into town and increase awareness of Fruita businesses.

“We want to get people aware of businesses in town and the fun things to do right here in Fruita,” City Manager Clint Kinney said.

To be considered for the first round of funding, businesses, organizations or individuals who want to apply for a grant must submit an application to the city by June 23. All grant events must be held by Nov. 30.
