Fruita, GJ fall in first round of 5A state soccer playoffs
The extra day didn’t help.
The Fruita Monument and Grand Junction boys soccer teams lost in the first round of the Class 5A state playoff a day after both teams were stuck in Silverthorne because of weather and travel conditions.
Bear Creek defeated Fruita Monument 3-0 and Fairview eliminated Grand Junction 3-1 on Wednesday. Both games were originally scheduled for Tuesday evening, but Fruita and Grand Junction had travel delays, postponing the games 22 hours.
Grand Junction captain Tim Hofer knocked Fairview goalie Philip Killeen out of the game on a play in front of the Knights’ goal with 2:45 left in the first half. Just over a minute later, Hofer beat backup Fairview goalie Alan Scheuermann to tie it 1-1.
Killeen returned in the second half and made a crucial save on a Hofer shot that helped the Knights advance in the 5A playoffs with a wind-blown 3-1 victory over the Tigers.
Bear Creek (11-5) broke open a 1-0 game with two goals in the second half. Sam Heller scored two goals for the Bears. Tyler Kenagy made eight saves in goal for the Wildcats (6-8-1), who qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2005.
Montrose used an aggressive attack to defeat Canon City 3-1 in the Class 4A first round.
Danny Silva had a goal and an assist for the Indians (13-2-1). Hector Almanza and Jose Zavala scored as well.
Montrose took 32 shots, 23 on goal. Canon City was limited to three shots on goal.
Durango advanced with a 1-0 victory over Pueblo Centennial.
Windsor defeated Moffat County 4-1. Battle Mountain hosts Green Mountain at 3 p.m. today.
Coal Ridge (15-1) won the first state playoff game in school history, defeating Telluride 3-0 in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs.
Carlos Rodriguez and Jorge Hernandez each scored a goal and assisted on another in the victory.
Rodriguez scored on an assist from Hernandez and Dusty Hibdon in the first half. Eliel Ruiz scored on an assist from Rodriguez and Hernandez scored on an assist from Sam Klomhaus.
Colorado Springs Christian eliminated Hotchkiss 7-0 in a matchup of the past two 3A state champions. The Lions scored five goals in the first half.
The Classical Academy defeated Aspen 6-0, but Roaring Fork defeated Pagosa Springs 1-0 and Basalt defeated Salida 5-0.
