Fruita police investigate school incident

Fruita police were tight-lipped Wednesday about an incident involving a student at Fruita Middle School, which is now the focus of a criminal investigation.

Officer John Coughran said a boy at the school is under investigation for interference with staff or students at an educational facility, a misdemeanor, because of an incident over the lunch hour when the school was locked down briefly by officials.

Police said in a statement that the boy was “out of control,” but the statement offered no details.

Authorities were called out to the school,  239 N. Maple St., at 11:43 a.m.

School District 51 spokesman Jeff Kirtland said the school was locked down for about 20 minutes as a precautionary measure. Police said there was no threat to other students or staff.

Students were told to shelter in place — a safety measure in which exterior doors remained locked while activity continues as usual inside — for roughly another 20 minutes after the lockdown, Kirtland said.

Officers left the school around 12:30 p.m.

Coughran said the boy was taken by an officer to the Fruita Police Department, where he was released to his mother. An investigation was begun later in the afternoon Wednesday after unspecified, additional information was received, Coughran said.
