Fruitvale house fire still under scrutiny

Grand Junction fire investigators still are working to determine the cause of a blaze that severely damaged a Fruitvale home early Friday morning.

Firefighters were called before 1 a.m. to the home at 508 1/2 Florence Road, which is near the intersection of the Interstate 70 Business Loop and 30 Road.

The initial crews on scene reported heavy fire inside with a large amount of smoke, said Mike Page, spokesman for the Grand Junction Fire Department.

The home was not occupied and was being used for storage, Page said. The home is owned by Larita Odell, according to Mesa County assessor records.

Page said the fire was difficult to extinguish because of the large amount of items being stored inside the house. It took 24 firefighters about 40 minutes to control the fire, he said.

“They were nervous to go inside because there isn’t a lot of room to maneuver,” he said.

One firefighter sustained a small laceration on his hand but was able to continue fighting the fire. No other injuries were reported.

Page said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage was estimated at $125,000.

“We’re leaning toward accidental, but there are just a lot of questions that have to be answered yet,” he said.
