Fund established for family who lost son in Meeker crash
A memorial fund has been established for a Meeker family whose young son died from injuries related to a two-car accident that happened Tuesday morning.
In a posting on Facebook entitled “Prayers for the Martin family,” friends wrote that donations to the fund are being accepted at First National Bank of the Rockies, P.O. Box 600, Meeker, CO 81641.
Cards can be addressed to the family at P.O. Box 125, Meeker, CO 81641.
Stone Martin, 9, died Wednesday morning at St. Mary’s Hospital, while the boy’s sister, Alahna Martin, 12, was listed in critical condition at a Denver hospital.
The children’s father, Paul Martin, said Thursday his daughter was still being treated at an intensive care unit in Denver, “but she’s making improvement.”
“We’re very hopeful,” he said. “Our faith is helping us through this.”
The siblings were riding in the back seat of a 2004 Dodge Caravan driven by their mother, Vanessa Martin, 30, of Meeker, which spun out of control around 7 a.m. Tuesday, roughly a mile south of Meeker on Colorado Highway 13.
The Colorado State Patrol said the southbound minivan slammed into an oncoming vehicle driven by Carla Slagle of Rangely.
Vanessa Martin and Slagle suffered what authorities described as “moderate” injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, but troopers have said alcohol and drugs are not suspected factors.
