Gardner sweeps GOP assembly; Gessler, Kopp make ballot

BOULDER — U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner walked away with it all at today’s Colorado Republican Party state assembly, taking nearly 74 percent of the 3,660 delegates who voted and the sole right to run against Democratic Sen. Mark Udall, who similarly won his party’s nomination for re-election.

At the same time, Secretary of State Scott Gessler and former state Sen. Mike Kopp of Arvada will be on the June primary ballot, facing former congressman Tom Tancredo, who has already been certified for that ballot.

Former congressman Bob Beauprez did not participate in the assembly process. He has turned in petitions but has yet to be certified for the ballot. The winner of that primary will face Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper in November, who also was nominated for re-election by his party today at the Colorado Democratic Assembly in Denver.

In down-ticket races, Cynthia Coffman, deputy attorney general under John Suthers, won the preponderance of the delegates over state Rep. Mark Waller, R-Colorado Springs, who barely earned the 30 percent needed to qualify for the ballot.

Meanwhile, Colorado Treasurer Walker Stapleton and El Paso County Clerk Wayne Williams were unopposed in their races for treasurer and secretary of state, respectively. They will face Democrats Betsy Markey and Joe Neguse, respectively.
