Garfield County residents targeted in phone scam

Garfield County residents reportedly are being victimized by a phone scam out of a Texas jail.

The Rifle Police Department said residents there have been receiving collect calls from the Harris County Jail in Houston. When a resident accepts the call, an inmate posing as a deputy inquires about somebody in jail. When residents deny knowledge of the jailed person, the inmate gives a phone number starting with *72, saying the resident should call it to reverse the collect-call charge.

Instead, *72 forwards the resident’s incoming calls to the given number, letting the inmate call an acquaintance collect with the charges later appearing on the resident’s phone bill.

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Department said the scam is occurring all over the country.

Rifle police say residents who suspect they are being victimized can dial *73 to turn off forwarding. They also may block their phones from inmate calls by visiting http://www.securustech.net, police say.
