Gators treated to rock concert, “Music Making Music”

Lead guitarist Mike Crowder from the band, Going Second, entertained students with a live concert at Mount Garfield Middle School Friday afternoon.

The Mount Garfield Middle School Gators were treated to an afternoon rock-n-roll concert on the last day of school before spring break.

The band Going Second performed a live alternative rock concert in an effort to encourage students to learn to play an instrument, sing, or “just keep rockin’ it on Guitar Hero.”

The concert was part of the Music Making Music Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Going Second members Josh Alfaro and Mike Crowder, whose primary goal is to reintroduce music into the American educational system.

Alfaro and Crowder quit their 9-to-5 jobs last October to dedicate themselves to the Music Making Music Foundation. “We’ve walked away from our careers to do this and we hope to take it to a national level,” said Alfaro.

Alfaro plans to recruit as many bands as possible to perform concerts for middle and high school students across America. “We’re looking to expand it to 50 bands,” he said.

The band, Going Second, was formed by placing ads on Craigslist. The four members were brought together in Salt Lake City from across the country and started a national tour of schools. Their music does not contain foul lyrics or encourage bad behavior.

Alfaro said the band wanted to introduce kids to rock music outside of the traditional setting, like bars or wild parties. “We’re just a rock band having fun that wants to send out a positive message about Rock-n-Roll—It’s not all sex and drugs,” he said.

The Music Making Music Foundation does not charge for school appearances. For more information, visit or
