GJ man accused of sex assault on a child
Derek Russell is being held on a $75,000 bond.
A 24-year-old Grand Junction man faces a charge of sexual assault on a child after he fled a Fruita home when the mother of his alleged 13-year-old victim found him in her daughter’s bedroom.
Derek Russell Plummer, 24, remained Monday in the Mesa County Jail in lieu of $75,000
Plummer was arrested Friday after he escaped through the bedroom window of the 13-year-old girl when her mother returned home to check on her, according to an affidavit.
The mother had previously obtained a restraining order to prevent Plummer from being near her daughter.
The girl had stayed home from school on Friday and called Plummer, who went to her house, the affidavit said.
The girl told Fruita investigators that she had sex with Plummer on Friday.
Mesa County Sheriff’s investigators had arrested the 6-foot-tall, 180-pound Plummer in October on suspicion of sexual assault on a child as a pattern of abuse in a case involving the same girl.
In that case, which still is pending, the girl said she twice had sex with Plummer, once in his residence at 640 Avalon Court, and once in his car on the side of the road.
Under questioning during the investigation leading up to Plummer’s arrest, the girl told investigators that they had sex at her instigation.
In his first interview with sheriff’s investigators, Plummer insisted the sex was consensual and that he knew people wouldn’t understand how anyone could love such a young girl.
The girl also wrote to Plummer to warn him about the investigation, according to the affidavit that led to the October arrest.
The girl wrote to Plummer to tell him that he might not be arrested “only because they know I won’t be a good witness in court.”
