GJ tea party a protest of Obama fiscal plans

A tea-party tax protest similar to events across Colorado and the nation is planned for April 15 in Grand Junction.

The tea party will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Lincoln Park.  The theme is similar to the Boston Tea Party, in which colonial Americans protested British taxes on tea by dressing as Indians and dumping tea overboard from ships anchored in Boston Harbor.

The events have sprung up in the wake of the economic stimulus package and President Obama’s budget proposal.

Organizers are posting plans for the Grand Junction party on the Web at http://www.GJResult.com, and information also is available at http://www.taxdayteaparty.com.

Plans include a march on the grassy area on the west side of Lincoln Park and then to the intersection of 12th Street and North Avenue.

Organizers are asking that participants pin tea bags to their hats or shirts and bring their own signs, as well as wear sensible shoes and bring sunscreen and water.

The organizers also note on the GJResult Web site that they are seeking a spokesman for the event.
