Grand Junction teenager Diana L. Luttrall, 16, died Thursday night after the vehicle she was riding in rolled over about 11:30 p.m. on Interstate 70 west of Parachute.

The driver of the 2001 Ford Explorer, Stephen L. Ludwig, 22, of Rifle, was taken from the scene by medical personnel for injuries he sustained in the crash, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Ludwig was driving west on the interstate when the vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway, traveled down the center of the median, began to rotate, collided with the guardrail and rolled one and a half times.

Luttrall was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Garfield County Coroner’s Office. The vehicle landed on its roof, facing east.

Excessive speed and alcohol use are contributing factors in the crash, according to the State Patrol, which is investigating the incident. State Patrol Trooper Gilbert Mares said charges against Ludwig are likely.
