GJ Vitamin Cottage pulls fresh ground peanut butter
Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage has recalled its freshly ground peanut butter because of a potential association with salmonella.
The Grand Junction Vitamin Cottage pulled all freshly ground peanut butter off the shelves Friday and has not produced more, said Joe Leech, store manager.
The peanut butter recall is for the freshly ground peanut butter produced only in Vitamin Cottage stores and does not include jarred peanut butter, Leech said.
Although none of the Grand Junction Vitamin Cottage’s peanut supply has tested positive for salmonella, the 25 Vitamin Cottage stores in Colorado issued a recall as a precaution, said Nancy Flynn, marketing director for Vitamin Cottage.
Vitamin Cottage receives organic peanuts from The Peanut Corp. of America’s Texas facility.
All peanuts potentially exposed to salmonella came from The Peanut Corp. of America’s Georgia facility.
Flynn did not know if the Georgia facility grew organic peanuts.
All products sold in Vitamin Cottage stores are all-natural or organic.
Peanut Corp. of America issued a product recall Jan. 13, and additional products have been recalled since then.
“I’ve never seen a product recall this big,” Leech said.
No one locally has complained of salmonella poisoning from the freshly ground peanut butter, which is a popular product with customers, Leech said.
Anyone who has purchased freshly ground peanut butter from Vitamin Cottage can return it to the store for a full refund or store credit, Flynn said.
