GJ dad, son seriously hurt in I-70 crash

A Grand Junction man and his son were seriously injured in a two-car accident early Thursday morning on Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon.

Colorado State Patrol officials said the man, Omar Palma, 33, and his 6-year-old son were among 10 people in the two vehicles, all of whom sustained minor to serious injuries.

The accident occurred when a Wisconsin man lost control of his 2002 Jeep Liberty on snowy roads near milepost 119 about three miles east of Glenwood Springs.

The man, Lyrell Luebker of La Crosse, Wis., spun out of control, collided with a concrete barrier and skidded to a stop, blocking both lanes of the highway, the State Patrol said.

Moments later, Palma came upon the accident and skidded on the icy roads and collided with the Liberty, hitting it broadside at about 50 mph.

The accident occurred around 5:40 a.m. Thursday. It was Palma’s birthday.

The occupants were taken to nearby hospitals, but no information about their conditions were available.
