GJ man held in ‘94 Boulder slaying

David Trujillo

Boulder police arrested a Grand Junction man at his home Monday morning on suspicion of beating a Boulder man to death in 1994.

David John Trujillo, 42, was booked into Boulder County Jail and faces charges of second-degree murder. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Trujillo’s Grand Junction address was not available Monday.

Trujillo is accused of killing David Eugene Cox, 55, who was found dead in his Boulder home. An autopsy showed he died of massive head injuries caused by a blunt-force trauma.

Boulder police reopened the cold case in 2004, according to the Boulder Police Department.

“They’ve been working it for a long time and consulting with the (district attorney),” Boulder Police Department spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said. “They reached that point that the detectives feel comfortable about (the arrest).”

Though it’s unclear how long Cox had lived in Grand Junction, he has had some run-ins with local law enforcement.

Trujillo was first arrested in early 2001 by Grand Junction police officers on a misdemeanor charge of harassment, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

Later that year, on May 4, he was arrested on charges of assault and menacing with a deadly weapon. Trujillo pleaded guilty to the assault charge and was sentenced to three years in prison in November 2001, serving two of those three years.

Trujillo also had been arrested multiple times starting in 1990 on the Front Range on suspicion of larceny, escape, shoplifting and being a fugitive. He was arrested again on March 3, 2004, by deputies with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department on suspicion of third-degree assault and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors, and was sent back to prison for a parole violation March 26, 2004, records show.

Huntley said Trujillo was arrested at 9:30 a.m. without incident.
