GJHS, PHS choirs send 14 to national conference

Eleven Grand Junction High School students and three students from Palisade High School participated March 13-16 in the American Choral Directors Association 2013 National Conference in Dallas.

The annual conference invites students to try out for four choirs: one for grades four through eight, one for grades six through nine and two for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. Up to 300 students are accepted into each choir for a total of up to 1,200 students from across the United States.

Grand Junction High students Kassidy Flick, Kylie Heringer, Afton Lard, Cori Patterson, Carmen Pipe, Shannon Reeve and Viviane Turman auditioned for and received spots on the women’s choir for 10th- through 12th-graders. Grand Junction High students Zac Barger, Emmy Luker and Jordan Quintanna were accepted into the high school mixed choir; and classmate Rachelle Jahnke made it into the middle school/junior high choir.

Palisade High students Michelle Aquino, Calliway Jo Levin and Anastasia Wright participated in the national conference choirs.

Students submit audition recordings electronically and have their voices judged by a panel of people who do not know which schools the students attend. Grand Junction High Choir Director Marcia Wieland said having 11 students from the same school pass auditions is a rare achievement. She said her school took the most students of any Colorado school to the national conference.

“I’m really proud of my students. They got their music in November and practiced diligently. It’s a wonderful opportunity,” she said. “We’ll definitely apply next year.”

Any school with a choir teacher who is a member of the American Choral Directors Association can have students audition for the conference. The association alternates every other year between hosting a national conference and regional conferences.
