GJHS track coach suspended after scuffle
Grand Junction High School head track coach and physical education teacher Darrell Simonton was suspended Thursday pending an investigation into an alleged scuffle on Wednesday night.
Simonton, 45, Dustin Foraker, 27, and Clay Girtman, 19, were issued summonses by officers with the Grand Junction Police Department at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at 2555 F 1/2 Road on suspicion of disorderly conduct and fighting in public. Foraker is listed as living at the F 1/2 Road address.
Girtman said that Foraker, who is Simonton’s son-in-law, was seen at Old Chicago’s on Wednesday night threatening him and his family and had spit in Simonton’s wife’s face.
Foraker, who was contacted Thursday, declined to discuss the incident, saying he wanted to
“put it all behind him.”
Girtman said he and two of Simonton’s sons went to Foraker’s home at Foraker’s request to either talk or fight over the issue, when Girtman was hit by Foraker in the head with a bat and called racial slurs. Girtman, who didn’t know Darrell Simonton had arrived at the home, said
Simonton came to his rescue.
