GJPD bomb unit blows up ‘suspicious’ package

Grand Junction police officers and the department’s bomb unit responded to a report of a suspicious package Sunday morning outside Rio Grande Federal Credit Union.

A passer-by spotted a brown package at 9:30 a.m. Sunday outside the credit union at 760 Rood Ave., according to Grand Junction Police Sgt. Doug Norcross. Norcross said the package was not a mail parcel and did not appear to have been delivered by a mail or a delivery service. He said officers did not find out what the box contained.

“Our explosives team did a very good job of destroying it,” he said.

It is standard procedure for the police department to destroy suspicious packages, according to Norcross.

“They don’t take any chances with things like that,” he said.

Officers and the bomb unit cleared the scene by 11:15 a.m. Sunday.
