A long-awaited trailer needed to serve as a post office for the Glade Park community has arrived in Grand Junction, and Mesa County is preparing its final destination.

The U.S. Postal Service moved the trailer from the town of Como in central Colorado to Grand Junction. The move should be complete “very shortly,” Grand Junction Postmaster Daniel Reyes said.

New post-office boxes have been ordered and are expected to arrive soon, he said.

“It’s a better trailer. There are more post-office boxes,” Reyes said. “It should satisfy everyone.”

Mesa County in the meantime is pouring footers, preparing to make it accessible to the disabled, working on electrical connections and making other preparations for the trailer, which will sit on a pad that the county built on Glade Park, Mesa County Commissioner Craig Meis said.

Once the trailer is hauled up to Glade Park, a five-year effort to get a full-service post office for the area will be complete.

Glade Park residents organized a committee to get a post office after the postal service in 2006 shut down its operation in the Glade Park Store for reasons that remain unexplained.

Residents put together a committee in 2009 to lobby for a new post office.

A temporary trailer that has been parked next to the Glade Park Community Center has been inadequate because it’s not fully accessible and has too few post-office boxes, residents said.

Mesa County spent $29,000 to build a pad for the new trailer just west of the Glade Park Fire Department.

No date to place the trailer in its new home has been scheduled. Postal Service officials had said they hoped to have the trailer in place by May.

The Postal Service can’t afford to complete the construction work needed to place the trailer, said Al DeSarro, spokesman for the Postal Service in Denver.

“We’re scrimping for every cent we’ve got,” DeSarro said. “It’s been promised to us several times,” Meis said. “I’ll believe it when I see it. This has been quite an entertaining ordeal.”
