Go-kart crash kills girl, 9

POLICE TAPE SURROUNDS an all-terrain vehicle and trailer that pulled into the path of a go-kart racer Sunday morning at Grand Junction Motor Speedway, officials said.

A 9-year-old Aurora girl died Sunday after crashing her go-kart during a racing competition at Grand Junction Motor Speedway.

Taybor Duncan, who was wearing proper safety gear, rolled her go-kart after it clipped a maintenance vehicle which had been driven onto the track about 8 a.m. at the facility at 3030 Interstate 70 Frontage Road, according to Mesa County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Sally Weese.

Taybor’s go-kart had crested a hill on the track and was descending when she collided with a flatbed trailer hauled behind an all-terrain vehicle, which was crossing the track in order

to reach racers involved in another accident, Weese said.

The go-kart clipped the trailer, rolling several times, Weese said.

The operator of the ATV was a man employed by Grand Junction Motor Speedway.

It wasn’t clear whether racers were warned or advised to slow down after the initial accident, which the employee was responding to, Weese said.

“That’s all part of the investigation,” she said.

Initial police dispatch reports indicated that emergency responders were performing CPR on the girl as she was taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital.

Taybor, whose parents were in attendance for Sunday’s event, had traveled from the Front Range with a racing club from the Denver area, Weese said.

Weese said the girl was wearing all required safety gear, including a helmet and protective chest plate, at the time of the accident.

Operations were suspended for the day at the speedway after the accident, Weese said.

Phone messages left with the facility’s management were not immediately returned.
