Gourd festival moved to springtime

The Western Colorado Botanical Gardens has moved its Calabash Gourd Festival from fall to the spring.

The family event still features gourd-themed activities and displays and will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Gardens, 641 Struthers Ave.

There will be gourd art and demonstrations, craft and food vendors, and entertainment and games, such as a gourd toss and mini-gourdster derby.

Members of the Calabash Gourd Artisans group are selling raffle tickets for a gourd art “quilt.” The centerpiece of the quilt is three dimensional and the remaining pieces that make up the quilt are a combination of carved, collaged, inlaced or of natural plant materials, and most are signed by the artists. Raffle tickets cost $2 each or $5 for three and you do not have to be present to win.

Admission to the festival is free and proceeds will benefit the gardens.
