Grand Junction alumnus presents colors as member of elite honor guard

DEAN HUMPHREY/The Daily Sentinel—Air Force Airman 1st Class Grant Kampa, a 2012 graduate of Grand Junction High School, stands at attention after presenting the flag at the school’s graduation ceremony Tuesday.

A member of the Grand Junction High School Class of 2012 presented the colors Tuesday at Stocker Stadium for the Class of 2013 commencement.

Airman 1st Class Grant Kampa, a member of the Air Force Honor Guard, whose service includes the inauguration of President Barack Obama, happened to be home on a recruiting trip when the opportunity arose to serve at the commencement.

Kampa qualified to try out for the Honor Guard during basic training and was among the six selected for the Honor Guard from a field of 400.

Kampa stood ramrod straight and unmoving next to the U.S. flag during the nearly two-hour commencement.

“I’m just here to support everybody,” he said, and to show that the military “is a good place to start a career.”
