Grand Junction child molester once again accused of sex assault on boys
A Grand Junction registered sex offender, who served half of a prison sentence for sodomizing an 8-year-old boy, was arrested Thursday on allegations he repeatedly molested a pair of 8-year-old boys over a period of four years.
Michael Tracy McFadden, 41, also remains the focus of ongoing investigation involving more potential victims, “locally and in other jurisdictions,” Mesa County District Attorney Pete Hautzinger told a judge during bond arguments.
County Judge Bruce Raaum ordered McFadden held at the Mesa County Jail on a $500,000, cash-only bond following advisement on 16 felony counts including sexual assault on a child and sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and as a pattern of abuse. He’s charged with acts between March 2008 and this past December.
McFadden was convicted of sexual assault on a child in a 1990 Grand Junction police investigation and sentenced in 2001 to serve eight years in prison. He was paroled in August 2005, according to Colorado Department of Corrections records.
Police last month opened a new investigation after the grandmother of one of the alleged victims reported McFadden had inappropriately touched her grandson while the boy was at McFadden’s home. The boy had been staying there weekends.
The boy was formally interviewed within days at the Western Slope Center for Children.
“When asked how many times (McFadden) had touched his ... (boy) answered ‘I lost count,” the affidavit said.
The boy positively identified McFadden as the abuser, the affidavit said.
Investigation showed McFadden had been living in a Grand Junction home with six young children.
The second alleged victim came forward on Jan. 2, telling investigators McFadden had inappropriately touched him on several occasions while they were sleeping on a couch together, according to the affidavit. The boy described another incident, which he said happened in 2008, when McFadden drove him and another boy to the roller dam near the Gunnison River, where he parked and sodomized both children, the affidavit said.
One of the boys from the roller dam incident reached out to authorities in Arizona in 2008. A Grand Junction detective found a report dated Dec. 15, 2008, involving the Pinal County Sheriff’s Department in Arizona. Deputies there went to a home in Gold Canyon, Ariz., on a report of a 911 hang-up.
The boy told them a man “did nasties to me” and touched him inappropriately. The matter was referred for investigation.
“There was no evidence any follow-up investigation was conducted by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Department concerning the 2008 disclosure,” the affidavit reads.
