Grand Junction City Council candidate opinions

Should the city of Grand Junction continue to fund Grand Valley Transit, or should the bus system look for a permanent source of funding through a new tax or fee?

District A:Tom Kenyon

“We need the Grand Valley Transit system. Our city needs to continue to fund the Grand Valley (Transit) until some other idea comes along. We would be shooting ourselves in the foot by eliminating funding and putting them in a situation to force cutbacks.”

District A: Ken Sublett

“I would be very reluctant right now to suggest ... that we need to come up with another kind of tax. There may be a time when that’s appropriate, but certainly now it is not. I would say we should look at this on a routine basis and (for now) let’s fund it the way we have it.”

District D: Bonnie Beckstein

“If you asked me that question about two years ago, I would be in favor of pursuing a (regional transportation authority) because I just think GVT needs a more stable source of income. ... But it’s something that the public would be uncomfortable with until the economy stabilizes.”

District D: Reford Theobold

“I think a transit authority or whatever you want to call it will accomplish two things. Number one, it equalizes how much everybody pays to support it, and number two, since obviously any kind of tax support will go to the voters, we’ll find out if they think this is an important service.”

District E: Teresa Coons

At-large: Roland Cole

“I don’t think it would be a good situation to make them go away. While I don’t use the bus system myself, I know people who do and would have trouble getting around without it. I think the city has to do some subsidizing of it.”

At-large: Bill Pitts

“I can’t intelligently respond because I’m not privy to how they’re funded. Now, in general, most public transportation is not self-supporting. It’s subsidized. But I don’t know what our options are.”

At-large: Sam Susuras

“I believe that Grand Valley Transit is very important to the Grand Valley, and we should research every way we can, every source we can, to keep it operational. If we can find the money in the general fund of the city, if there are grants out there of some kind, we need to research that and find it.”
