Grand Junction food bank gets new home in Palisade
The change in the calendar also means a change in location for the Western Slope branch of the Food Bank of the Rockies, which takes over its new space in Palisade starting today.
Workers at the facility at 734 Scarlet Drive in Grand Junction — a spot the organization has used as its western regional hub since 2001 — were busy Thursday moving their staff and supplies to their new 27,360-square-foot home at 119 Bower St. in Palisade.
Today is the last day they’ll accept food donations at the Scarlet Drive facility, located off the Interstate 70 Business Loop on the west side of Grand Junction, according to administrative assistant Betty Heath.
After today, people wanting to drop off donations will need to make the drive to the new warehouse in Palisade. Heath said the organization should be fully transitioned to the large new facility by Monday.
Thursday was the first day of operation in Palisade for the food bank group, which said it distributed more than 41 million pounds of food last year through 1,003 partner organizations. Food Bank of the Rockies also counts a main warehouse in Denver and a branch in Casper, Wyo.
The local Western Slope branch first began operating in 1998.
By taking over the Bower Street warehouse, Palisade again has a resident for the town’s largest commercial building. Food Bank of the Rockies added new refrigeration facilities, pallet racking and a food processing room to the warehouse to meet its food distribution and storage needs.
According to Food Bank of the Rockies, the group chose Palisade for its new location because “the area is very desirable due to its freeway access, access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and it is more centrally located to the partner agencies” the organization serves.
If the drive to Palisade is a bit much for locals looking to drop off food or supplies, food donations also are accepted at the Community Food Bank, located in the Mesa County Central Services building at 200 S. Spruce St., or at The Salvation Army, 1235 N. Fourth St., in Grand Junction.
