Grand Junction woman, 26,  dies in rollover near school

A 26-year-old Grand Junction woman died in a single-vehicle, rollover accident Saturday morning on D 1/2 Road, according to the Colorado State Patrol and the Mesa County Coroner’s Office.

Skye A. Cannell was the driver and only occupant of an Infiniti coupe headed west on D 1/2 Road when the vehicle veered to the right, hit a concrete barrier, a post and a sign, rolled over and landed on the front lawn of Chatfield Elementary School, 3188 D 1/2 Road, the State Patrol said.

The impact and rollover flung a tire off the small car and littered the front of the elementary school with metal scraps.

Cannell was partially ejected from the vehicle and died on scene. She was not wearing a seat belt, the State Patrol said.

The coroner’s office said she died from head injuries.
State Patrol Sgt. Scott Simons said there was nothing at the scene that would indicate alcohol was involved. A toxicology test is pending.

Speed is not being considered a factor in the accident, either, Simons said.

No witnesses to the accident had come forward as of Saturday morning.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the State Patrol at 858-2258.
