Grand jury reviews deaths at state mental hospital
PUEBLO — A Pueblo grand jury is investigating recent deaths at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo.
Denver’s KMGH-TV first reported on the investigation Tuesday and District Attorney Bill Thiebaut confirmed it to the Pueblo Chieftain in a story published today. He wouldn’t say whose deaths are under review.
Three people have died at the hospital in the past four years, including one who committed suicide and another who died after being restrained.
Colorado Department of Human Services spokeswoman Liz McDonough said she couldn’t comment.
On Monday, the department released a report requested after the deaths. It described how staff can avoid restraining patients and recommended that the hospital develop a suicide prevention plan.
