Grand Junction parolee suspected in armed theft

Man released from prison on parole twice this year

A Grand Junction man who was twice this year released on parole from state prison was arrested late Sunday for allegedly robbing cash and cigarettes from a North Avenue business.

Kristen L. Sheeks, 23, was arrested around 10 p.m. Sunday after officers spotted him hiding behind a car in the driveway of a home in the 500 block of 29 Road, according to an arrest affidavit.

The affidavit said two employees at Walgreens, 2900 North Ave., positively identified Sheeks as the man who earlier fled the store with cash and a carton of cigarettes after he claimed to have a handgun.

Sheeks “had his hand in his pocket making the cashier believe that he had a gun,” according to the affidavit. Officers were called around 9:40 p.m.

Sheeks was found in possession of a carton of Marlboro 100 cigarettes, an undisclosed amount of cash and a plastic BB gun, the affidavit said.

He was booked into the Mesa County Jail on suspicion of aggravated robbery and misdemeanor theft.

According to Colorado Bureau of Investigation arrest records, Sheeks has been arrested at least four times in Colorado since July 2004 on charges ranging from burglary, motor vehicle theft and criminal mischief.

Katherine Sanguinetti, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Corrections, said Sheeks arrived in state prison in June 2005 to serve a four-year sentence for Mesa County convictions on counts of burglary and criminal mischief.

He was released on parole this past January to Grand Junction.

Sheeks was arrested April 25 on a charge of absconding parole and sent back to prison on May 20, according to Sanguinetti.

He was released from prison again Sept. 22 to serve three years parole in Grand Junction.

Sheeks is expected to make a first court appearance on his new case today.
