Grand Junction Red Cross volunteers heading to Alabama

Two volunteers were to leave Grand Junction this morning, driving a Red Cross emergency-response vehicle to tornado-battered Alabama.

Volunteers Joe and Sandy Whitley of the Western Colorado Chapter of the Red Cross are bound for Hoover, Ala., where they will join in disaster-response efforts.

Tornadoes that swept through Alabama have claimed at least 300 lives while leveling entire towns.

The Whitleys will distribute meals, cleanup kits and disaster-recovery items to those who suffered losses of their homes and other property.

Disaster-relief efforts are funded by local donations.

Information about how to donate can be found at redcross.org or by calling 970-242-4851.
