Grand Valley’s record heat shouldn’t last much longer

A mechanic at Fox’s Garage on Pitkin Avenue took the cool air outside with him on Monday while working on the baking asphalt. He was just finishing up a head gasket job.

Apparently someone forgot to turn the oven off in the Grand Valley over the weekend as Monday’s triple-digit heat wave broke another record.

The mercury first struck 100 degrees at 3:40 p.m. Monday, blasting away a record of 99 set in 2002.

Temperatures were even hotter on Sunday at 101 degrees, tying a record for the same day in 2006.

Toasty weather in the lower 90s is expected today through Thursday, but relatively cooler temperatures back in the 80s are expected closer to the weekend, said hydrometeorological technician Becky Klenk of the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

Warm weather working to melt snowpack combined with a release of water from upstream reservoirs will have the Colorado River near flooding, according to Andy Martsolf, emergency manager for Mesa County.

Water will be flowing at higher than anticipated marks and was expected to crest at 12.4 feet between 3 and 4 a.m. today. Flooding is expected when the river is at 12.5 feet. Lowland areas may be affected, but flooding is expected to be minimal, Martsolf said.

Non-experienced boaters are encouraged not to tackle the high waters and wait about a week until the flows decrease. Single air chamber flotation devices are not recommended as trees and debris in the rushing water can puncture inflatable rafts and tubes, Martsolf said.

People also are encouraged to wear safety flotation vests while in the water.

“We just want people to be safe,” he said.
