Greg Assenmacher, R.I.P.

For more than 30 years, Greg Assenmacher has been a member of the Grand Junction Police Department, a key employee who has held a variety of important investigatory and leadership posts with the department.

But he was also an important part of this community, giving his time to organizations as diverse as Little League and Western Colorado Honor Flight for World War II veterans.

His death Monday at the age of 54 is a great loss to his family, his colleagues within the Police Department and the larger law enforcement community and to this region as a whole.

Rare are the people who are willing to put their lives on the line and continue even after being injured —  Assenmacher was shot while on duty in 1987 — while at the same time being active in the community and going above and beyond the call of duty to look after crime victims and their families.

Assenmacher was such a rare person, one that friends repeatedly referred to as kind-hearted and generous.

He will be greatly missed.
